![]() ![]() ![]() Trying to tell one giant epic story in Who only makes it feel smaller. While the Doctor did manage to untangle time and save his own life, the Silence still remains out there somewhere, and we are still left with a (hopefully) final story arc (The Question one). However, in this case, the story is not over yet. Both of which were enthralling for the very fact that a series-long story-arc was not common for DW. This, again, was an interesting development for the series Very reminiscent of the 4th Doctor's "Key to time" and the 6th Doctor's "A Time Lord's trial" full series story arcs. Another 3 episodes also devoted some part of 'em to allow this story to develop even more, The rebel flesh arc serving as The Doctor's mean to confirm his suspicions about Amy and Closing Time serving as what the doctor thought would be his last adventure. This story arc took 5 episodes of the series to be developed and resolved. My problems begin with series 6, which told the story of the silence trying to take out the doctor because "Insert infinite repetitions of that 'A question will be asked' speech here" and the Doctor trying to fight it. It was a very interesting experiment that I absolutely adored. To be honest, I found that refreshing and engaging, because it allowed for the final conflict of the series to feel all the more big and threatening. Plus, they constituted part of the climax on both two-parters of series 5. With various episodes ending in a dramatic close up of the aforementioned cracks. However, in series 5 the cracks in the universe story arc was allowed to take main stage. While past series always ended with a bang, and dropped subtle clues to it during all the episodes in the series, they never allowed for it to be anything more than a cue in the background. Mainly, the fact that it has taken the custom to tell a big sweeping story each series. While I have been watching doctor since I was 4 years old, and I am always up for some over the top adventure, usually in order to end the season, I've been growing weary of the current direction that DW has been taking since season 5 of New Who. ![]()
